Researching Past Xavier Student Identities

The tracking of race and ethnicity as part of a student record or database entry has only occurred since 1977. The need and requirement for this information was established by federal reporting requirements and continued by other regulatory agencies. Therefore, full information regarding the identity of students by race and ethnicity is not available prior to the introduction of this requirement.

Race and ethnicity are also not part of what Xavier defines as ‘directory information’ under FERPA, so Xavier does not release that information about specific students without proper authorization to do so. Aggregate information about race and ethnicity can be obtained from the Office of Institutional Research.

Resources such as the student newspaper, yearbooks, faculty/staff newsletters, press releases, alumni magazines, Black Student Association records, and other University records can be helpful in researching the history of underrepresented student and employee populations throughout Xavier’s history. Researchers should note, however, that many of these primary sources have their own inherent problems. For instance, many were primarily written by a white male majority and they may rely on incomplete data.
