There are many types of "articles".

The most common types that will be needed for an academic assignment are:

  • scholarly peer reviewed journal articles
  • popular articles from magazines and newspapers

Types of Articles:

Scholarly Articles (Academic Journals and Peer Reviewed)

  • Written by researchers and experts
  • Peer reviewed or refereed by scholars in same field
  • Specialized information for specific audience
  • Field specific vocabulary and jargon
  • Charts/graphs/figures
  • Footnotes, in-text citations, lengthy list of references
  • No ads

Popular Articles (Magazines and News)

  • Written by journalist, staff writer, or unnamed author
  • May have an editor
  • General information for a general audience
  • Everyday language
  • Color photographs
  • Few or no reference/citations
  • Contains ads
