Library Instruction for Librarians

Use this guide to assist with developing library instruction sessions.

Lesson Plans

Elements of a high quality lesson plan:

•Clear student learning outcomes
•Application of constructivist teaching theory (learners participate in their learning; learning is not passive)
•Asks students questions (often Socratic method)
•Includes 3-4 mini-lectures
•Includes 2-3 activities per class
•Assessment - particularly formative (assess student learning during session)
•Teacher reflection afterwards - SLOs achievement, inclusivity techniques and engagement effectiveness
 
Applying these elements improves student engagement and fosters a sense of belonging among the students.
