Constructivism

Constructivism

In order to apply active learning techniques, it's important to first understand the constructivist method of teaching and learning.

Constructivist teaching methods are based on constructivist learning theory, developed by Jean Piaget and John Dewey. Constructivist theory holds that learners are not passive recipients of knowledge but are more active in the process. They build on previous experience in order to make sense of what they are learning by engaging actively with the creation of meaning and knowledge.

Learner centered instructional design incorporates active learning techniques. This gives students agency over their own learning, respects the social, cultural and emotional significance of each student and creates an empathetic classroom environment.

Constructivism draws on the learner's prior knowledge, experiences and perceptions as they relate to the learning process.
Constructivist teaching methods utilize active learning techniques that are student centered.
