Free Time Ideas

1) Portal 31 Exhibition Mine: An interactive experience in which visitors get to understand what going to work in a mine is like. The cost for students is $11.95 if you show your student ID. 

2) Lamp House Coffee Shop: Located in Lynch, KY (about 20 minutes from Harlan). This coffee shop is located near the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum and is a great place to view the scenery Harlan County has to offer. 

Trip Focused Ideas

Kentucky Coal Mining Museum: A heritage center in the town of Benham, KY (about 20 minutes from Harlan). The displays in the museum exhibit elements and history of the coal mining industry in Eastern Kentucky.
