Core 100 Adaptation in Digital Age: The Hound of the Baskervilles

This LibGuide is designed for students to locate film and television adaptations of the novels we will be reading in class.

Adaptations for The Hound of the Baskervilles

This page provides options for viewing adaptations of The Hound of the Baskervilles. The adaptations are available on DVD, through the library's streaming video collections, through The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County's system, or from other commercial streaming sites such as Amazon Prime, Hulu and Netflix. I have divided the viewing into boxes according to type of access.

Note: To access items from The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, you will either ned to

  1. search OhioLINK, through Xavier's library webpage. There’s a link at the top of every record that says Search Ohio. When you click on that, you get a list of the item available in the public libraries and can request it just like you do regular OhioLINK items.
  2. obtain a (free) account/library card and check out the DVD there. If you act early enough, you can have the DVD delivered to and reserved at the library branch closest to you.

43 minutes

A modernization set in contemporary New York. Starring Jonny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu. Sherlock relocates to New York City, where he is assigned a "sober companion" to help him in his addiction recovery. This particular adaptation does some gender bending in casting: Dr. Joan Watson is a woman.

The Hounds of Baskerville (BBC 2012)

From the British television series Sherlock; Series 2, episode 2

88 minutes

This modernization takes place in contemporary London. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. This British series casts Dr. John Watson as a veteran from the Afghanistan wars. He becomes a companion to Sherlock as he attempts to solve crimes. The series launched the careers of Cumberbatch and Freeman, who have both gone on to play parts in The Hobbit and The Avengers series. The show's creators are also writers for Dr. Who. Series (or seasons) are often filmed several years apart as a result of the busy schedules of the creators and actors.
