This First-Year Seminar focuses on Adaptation in the Digital Age. We will be examining adaptation first by reading three source novels: Fences by George Orwell, The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.
We will study theories of adaptation--concepts like fidelity, appropriation, representation, fandoms, and color-blind casting. Students will apply the concepts we are learning in class as they watch at least two adaptations per novel.
We will also investigate how digital media is changing the way we consume, interact with, and tell stories. We'll examine how streaming services and even YouTube influence adaptation.
